Trip to the Rori.
Te Ara-o-Karanga-ā-hape | Haerenga
Carmen Jones
10:00
Led by sister Fallon, Come with us back to where it all began for so many — to Karangahape Road, the rori, the heartland and epicentre of generations of queer resistance, gathering, visibility and survival.
As part of our haerenga, we’ll reconnect with K’RD and its layered queer histories, tracing the legacy of Gay Liberation and the generations who have held this place as a site of resistance, belonging and expression. We’ll hear from Alex Wātene and get a sneak peek at the new Heru Hāpai Light Pou being erected along the Road.
The Heru Hāpai residency is culturally anchored, site-responsive and relationally accountable — honouring ancestral presence and the histories held within this place, while creating space for new expressions and future possibilities.
The Light Pou carry these connections forward: ahi kā, whenua, whakapapa, Takatāpuitanga, queer histories and liberation — illuminating what has been held here, what continues to burn, and what we are still becoming.
The full installation will be completed in November 2026. For Hui Takatāpui 26, we get to step into the story early — a special sneak peek of what is coming to the rori with thanks to KBA & Auckland council.
